Yearbook Sept 7

Yearbook Theme
The big words for today, Yearbook Theme. The theme is an idea that carries through the yearbook, a sort of flavor if you will (it haz a flavor?). For it to work, we need the theme to run through the book in a cohesive and clear manner. You don't want anyone thinking the flavor changed half-way through their single scoop ice-cream cone. We also must work to keep the theme but tailor it to our audience. When looking at the demographics of our school, this is quite a tall order (would grande or venti be more appropriate?).

One of our biggest untapped markets is our younger grades. In addition to getting their attention, letting them see they will be a part of our yearbook too, and all the other things; we also have to approach them a bit differently regarding the theme.

A high school yearbook is about capturing the essence and character of the school, to recreate the memories of now in the then in which it will be read, and read, and hopefully read again. These are the memories just before students leave one world and step into another. We are manifesting the memories of our peers, and we must do so tastefully, faithfully, and tie in the theme all at the same time. The varied activities, events, and everything else that surrounds the school (including what makes us unique) should be captured and included.

A middle school yearbook, on the other hand, has an audience more interested in a mix of entertainment and fun. However, this content still has to fit the theme, the same theme that the high school sections are under.

The yearbook's theme effects every thing within the book, photography, art, layouts, and even writing to some degree. Your task is to help generate some ideas for the theme that was introduced to you earlier in class.

TASK A

With our theme in mind, sketch and diagram a page for each of the following:
  • opening / introductory 2-page spread
  • club or activity 2-page spread (note if you designed it with a certain club/activity in mind)
  • student photos 2-page spread (note if you designed it with a certain grade level in mind)

Come up with a phrase / title for each of these within our theme:

  • Student Life
  • Academics
  • Sports
  • Organizations
  • People
  • Ads/Community

How might ideas differ for your designs between middle school and high school sections? Explain.

TASK 1
View the following presentation and answer its questions in your blog.

We will continue to look at themes next class, as it ties everything in the book together. Through out the year we will be working with how things fit within the theme as well.
