Continue working on creating your animation in Flash.

As people begin finishing their projects next week, we will discuss the final project. Those who finish early will be allowed to start the next one, but those who need it will still have through the 6th to complete their flash project.

Yearbook

3rd Photo Evaluation
Choose which four you think are the strongest of the following sports pictures from Boston Globe's Big Shots and justify them on your blog. The grades have been put in for the first one(Japan), and will be put in for the second(Cuba) this afternoon.

Continue working on current assignments; (pictures, photoshopping, advertising, etc).

We will continue working on the supplement and calendar until around the 20th of may. The remaining time will be spent preparing for your final. Instead of creating a final for you, I'd like to let you guys create the multiple choice final. Come up with 5 questions (+ answer) regarding material we've covered this year by the end of class Tuesday. Not every question is intended to be used (as it'd end up being a 250+ question test), and if there aren't enough that are quality, then I will create replacements for them.

Questions can be related to skills learned, products created and sold, software used, and etc. Be creative.

Upcoming Assignment Due Dates:
  • Photos from last 3 weeks put into keynote with captions (example). Due Friday, Apr. 29th/Monday, May 2nd.
  • Five questions + answers over content covered this year. Due Tuesday, May 3rd/Wednesday, May 4th.
  • Photo-shoot of an event on campus this 3 weeks. Top 5 photos from photo-shoot edited in the five styles of our yearbook. Due Wednesday, May 4th.
  • Photos from this 3 weeks put into keynote with captions (example). Due Thursday May 5th/Friday, May 6th.
  • Group Advertising Project. Due Thursday, May 5th/Friday, May 6th.

Continue working on creating a flash animation. There are different ways to animate your illustration. You are also welcome to use the internet to find other resources that will help you or consult with your peers.

Additional Resources
- Flash CS4 Tutorials
- Flash CS4 Videos (goes into more than we cover)
- Flash and Actionscript Tutorials

After Flash we will also create a small project in Dream Weaver. It's a bit more user friendly than flash. Overall, it's probably the easiest of the Adobe programs.

These two projects will take us to the 25th of May. The remaining time will be spent preparing for your final. Yearbook

- Group keynote slideshow (example) from previous photo assignment is due Monday, May 6th.

- Your photos due next May 4th (next wednesday). 5 photos from the event you chose, edited in the 5 different styles. You will need captions for them for the group keynote slideshow (example). The slideshow of these current photos will be due May 6th.

- As a group, figure out what sort of advertising project you would like to do. You will have this week and next week to create it.

Work productively to get everything finished on time.

Some groups didn't complete their Work Log last week. If your group is one of these, complete it today before late penalties really hold you back. Check last weeks posts to see what is included in the completed work log.

If you've been steadily progressing through the flash tutorials, today completes the last few from this series. If you got a little behind due to the need to finish your PSA, you may have quite a few videos to watch still.

If these are a bit basic for you, you are welcome to move ahead.

More tips and analysis regarding how groups work.

How to use layers in Flash.

Combining and transforming objects.

After following these videos, you should be able to illustrate things in Flash. However, there's still one more thing you'll need to be able to do for this project, and that's actually animate what you create. The easiest way to create motion in Flash is through tweening. You are welcome to find resources of your own, or use those on Adobe TV.

Yearbook

Independent Work
On the Boston Globe's Big Picture of Cuba looks back - and forward, choose your four favorite picture and caption combinations and post them on your blog with why.

Group Work
We still have around 80 yearbooks left. In your group, work on a way to advertise the yearbook to finish off this years sales. In addition, we also have a large amount of old yearbooks we can liquidate (including when the current seniors were 6th graders). We would like to try to get rid of any old yearbooks as well (10$ each). Work on an advertising concept/project with your group.

Due Today!
-PSA DVD
-Design Cycle Log

Read previous post for details regarding project specifications.

Whats Next?
If you haven't read this section of the previous post, do that first. After going through introductory videos, you should be able to both illustrate and animate a character in flash.

Getting Started in Flash
Discusses using bitmaps vs vectors in Flash.

Learn how to quickly and easily select multiple parts of your flash illustration.

Learn how to create objects that wont erase those behind them, and how to group objects. At this point, you may want to redraw your flash character with this new information at hand.

Your PSA is due at the end of this week (that's thursday due to the 3-day weekend). Even if you're done, watch it one last time. After having a few days away from it, you may catch things you need to improve or timing issues. Also, read you subtitles one more time, are they shown for a long enough period of time for a viewer to read the full sentence?

Whats due this week?
-PSA DVD
+ PSA must be a video in a language someone in the group is taking.
+ PSA must contain subtitles in english
+ DVD must have menus.
+ PSA DVD can only contain content created by you or that is royalty free.
-Design Cycle Log
+ Investigation Document
+ Plan Document
+ Storyboard
+ Script
+ Create Document
+ Evaluate Document
+ Collaboration Rubric

Whats Next?
This week, we will be starting Flash. What's do great about flash? A lot actually. Flash is used to create internet games (example 1 2), videos(example 1 2), and websites (examples 1 2; not all websites use flash). Of course, the understanding of flash needed to create these is much higher than you can gain in just a couple weeks, so this is just a starting point.

Getting Started in Flash
Introduction to Flash.

This video will tell you about the flash interface and workspace. It will also provide you with information regarding convenient and useful hot-keys/shortcut-keys. Try using them.

After watching the third video, you should be able to start drawing in flash. Create a character to use in our Flash activities.

Yearbook Today!

Main things that are due this new 3 weeks:
1- photoshoot from something happening on campus
2- top 5 photoshopped
3- top 5 photos with captions in a keynote (will be talked more about later)

1-
Think about what you want your out-of-class photography assignment to be for this three weeks. Make sure you have a backup choice or two. Use the calendar or PTA newsletter if you need to look for possible events to take photos of. Convey what you would like to cover with your team leader. The team leaders, half way through class will try to negotiate for their teams pics for this three weeks.

2- Look at the photos and captions on the link below
Direct Link: Japan's Crisis: One Month Later
Supporting Site: Boston Globe's The Big Picture

Decide on which 4 you feel are the strongest photos/caption combination. Defend why you chose these four- referencing photography concepts used would be a good way to help defend your choices. If their is a concept used that we haven't recently discussed, you are welcome to look them up or ask me.

Once everyone in the group has posted their choices on their blog, meet with your group. As a group, decide on which 4 you can all agree on.

End of Grading Term

Today is the last day of this grading term. Make sure your photos, one photoshopped in each of the 5 styles are on the designated computer.

If you hadn't already (see previous posts), make sure you've posted photos(from around on the internet, none of actual students) of each photography concept have been posted on your blog.

yearbook Today!

Photography
Today will be divided into 4 parts.

1st- Refreshing on photography concepts.
Can you remember these photography concepts from the video clip last class (as well as from earlier in the year)?
  • Balancing Elements
  • Creating Depth or Space
  • Fill the Frame
  • Framing
  • Leading Lines
  • Pattern
  • Symmetry
  • Texture
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Unusual View Angles

2nd- Examples of Photography Concepts
Post a photo example of each of the concepts on your blog. Below each photo, label what concept it exemplifies. You may use the internet to find and post pictures. For Rule of Thirds, do NOT use a picture that has the grid on it.

3rd- In the link below is a photo shoot by one of the editors. Using your understanding of photography, select the top five photos and make sure you can defend why you chose them. The forth part will further explain what to do with your selection of five. For now, just hang on until the last part is posted.

4th- Get together with your team and discuss the top 5 photos members selected. As a team, come to an agreement on the top five. When your team has decided and is ready to defend your selection, let me know.

Waiting for the next part?

Due to testing today, we will not be filming. Use class to begin entering video segments from last class into iMovie. Take different segments from different clips/different angles to compose your scene out of multiple shots. Some of the flip cams film in avi format- and iMovie doesn't normally like avi.

Once you have the segments arranged in the way you wish, you can begin creating the subtitles. Having trouble finding copyright free music you can use? Either make your own in garageband, or check out IMSLP.

If you need any help, let me know and I will provide assistance.
